The Charms of Life on the Water

New to the boating world? Life on the water is full of small pleasures and is more accessible than many people first assume. It’s at once relaxing and exciting and a welcome escape from the stresses and strains of urban life. Follow our guide to getting yourself rigged up and ready for your first nautical experience.

In ancient times, ships were not just a form of long-distance transport but were also responsible for some of history’s biggest voyages, discoveries and developments. Their role as vehicles of communication, food supplies and migration has made them a key player in the progress of humanity. Perhaps that’s why sailing still retains an air of adventure and romance today.

Boating has become a passion for enthusiasts the world over whether it be a relaxing weekend hobby or a competitive sport. Those addicted to life on the water describe it as a unique experience: the feeling of being surrounded by water with the sun on your back and the breeze on your face. It also offers a new perspective on the world. Viewing the land from the water creates a wonderful sense of novelty and freshness.

Boating is not only a unique way to take a break from your daily routine, relax and get in touch with nature, it also makes for a great day out with friends and family.

Boating comes in many forms

Boating covers a wide range of categories and there’s something for everyone from lightweight, easy-to-operate RIBs (rigid inflatable boat) to more high-adrenaline power boats or sailing yachts. Plus, there’s no need to venture all the way out to sea, you can start by testing the waters in lakes, rivers or canals close to you. Boats are rentable by the hour, by the day or for the weekend, with or without a driver.

Alternatively, if you want to do it up in style and impress your friends, up the ante and rent a luxury yacht and crew. These bigger vessels, available for charter, are equipped with all the basic home comforts and some luxury details including hot water, showers, flushing toilets, modern kitchens and ample space to play and sleep.

Trawling through page after page of boat rental companies may seem overwhelming at first as the opportunities are endless but take your time and you’re sure to find something that meets your exact requirements. Be sure to enquire about boating licenses and legislation too which will vary from boat to boat.

Learning the ropes

Believe it or not, learning to drive a boat is as easy (if not easier) than driving a car.
For smaller vessels, boat operators will spend a few hours explaining how to handle the boat including tips on cruising, mooring and using the locks. However first-timers looking to rent luxury yachts or other large vessels will want to consider hiring a skipper to drive and operate the boat while you sit back and enjoy the ride.

If you’re serious about your new hobby, there are numerous courses available to teach you how to do-it-yourself without the assistance of a hired skipper and crew. These range from Beginners Yachting courses teaching you to steer a yacht, handle the sails, work the ropes and ensure safety on board. Various Crew courses are also available training you to become an active crew member and handle the day to day duties on board. Most courses range from three-day crash courses to longer two week options.

Once you’ve got some yachting experience under your belt and have an understanding of the basic navigation skills you can take the next step and complete a course to become a fully certified skipper.

Boating is also becoming an increasingly popular pastime with women and there are numerous women-only sailing courses available. Many are led by qualified female skippers who will guide you through ‘man overboard’ drills, safety, boat handling and tying the essential knots.

Use our extensive directory to help you get started and make the most out of your experiences on the water. Happy sailing!

I joined my local sailing club two years ago. I absolutely love it! Its my time…meaning my life is hectic and I get bored very easily. I like to be kept busy so am not usually found on the beach. However you may find me at the river out on one of the many club boats. I love to get my hands dirty and muck in. Its a great way to enjoy the nature and I feel a sense of accomplishment. Supporting my club and its members in a local way. And this site inspires me to look at the GLOBAL picture…
