Whether you’re in the market for a new sailing yacht or you just like to window shop, The Marine Guide has compiled a list of its top 10 sailing yachts on the market for your viewing pleasure.
1. The Maltese Falcon (Perini Navi)
Perini Navi’s famous Maltese Falcon sailing yacht has been on the yachting market for some time but continues to make great waves, most recently winning the Perini Navi Cup 2011. Her success is due to her revolutionary sailing system, the Falcon Rig which features three self-standing and rotating masts hosting 15 sails making for a total sail area of 2,400 square meters (25,791 ft square), handled by the ultimate in Perini Navi Sail Control. This beautiful high performance vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots in racing conditions and offers luxurious quarters for large scale entertaining.
2. Beneteau Oceanis 41, 45 and 48
Beneteau has breathed new life into its famous 25-year-old Oceanis sailing yacht range this year with three smart new models, the 41, 45 and 48 that all deserve a mention, offering more space, safety, speed and comfort for sailing aficionados. The cockpit remains closed in by the transom seat, which opens electrically to convert to a bathing platform, giving direct access to the sea. All three are eligible for the Dock&Go technology, which means they can be manoeuvred on a pocket handkerchief, by fingertip from the helm position by means of the Joystick, even in a strong cross wind. We like the way they look too.
3. Sunreef 58
Sunreef came up with the 58 sailing yacht to cater to the demand for a luxury, high performance boat that’s smaller and lighter for those who want to go it alone without a full crew in tow. The smart custom-designed boat is built from high-tech composite materials via vacuum infusion and can accommodate up to nine guests in up to five cabins below deck. Up on the flybridge, you’ll find Sunreef’s trademark helm station and seating area and a large sunbathing lounge perfect for weekend cruises in the Mediterranean.
4. Hunter 36e
North American boat builders Hunter released the new 36 e yacht this year to popular acclaim. The sleek, modern vessel works well as both a family cruiser and a high performance sailing vessel thanks to its Americas Cup style square cut main, lead keel and single line slab reefing instead of the in mast furling. Despite being only 36 feet, the yacht also boasts a huge, light and airy interior for all the family, a lengthier cockpit and a fold-down swim platform.
5. Oyster 625
The innovative new Oyster 625 was only launched earlier this year and has already been nominated for the best Luxury Cruiser in the European Yacht of the Year awards. With its modern profile and contemporary styling, it shines above and below deck. The sail boat is specifically designed for easy, short-handed sailing for families who prefer to sail solo without crew assistance. Highlights include a spacious, flush aft deck for sun lounging, spacious saloon with triple “seascape” vertical windows. With an overall length of just under 63.5 feet (19.4 meters) she’s bound to be the centre of attention wherever she goes.
6. Elan 350
Although launched last year, the sleek and sporty Elan 350 is still going strong. It’s a bigger, updated version of the highly successful Elan 310 and features the same twin rudders, powerful chine hull form and T-keel configuration. However it’s lighter for its length making for incredible directional stability, increased sail-carrying power and higher speeds. She also boasts user-friendly steering for comfortable cruising.
What’s more, the lavish cockpit offers a twin wheel layout, replicating the sort of ergonomic arrangement that you’d only ever thought possible in a boat over 40 foot.
7. J111
The J/111 from J Boats has become a popular sailing yacht since its release. It’s a sleek, speedy, one-design 36 footer that is the ultimate day sailing, racing and weekend cruising sailboat. It’s easy to handle, comfortable, accelerates quickly, slices to windward at 7+ knots and hits double-digit speeds downwind. Although compact in size, it offers all the necessary comforts for an overnight cruise.
8. Tartan 4700
Following on from the success of the raised salon Tartan 4400, the 4700, released earlier this year, features a three cabin, two head layout and ample galley space to suit your sailing lifestyle be it long weekends on the water, summer cruises or offshore destination cruising. Sailing performance comes first with Tartan and the boat’s deck plan is optimized to allow crew to efficiently control sail shape and trim from the cockpit and incorporates the famous CCR sail plan (originally introduced on the award winning Tartan 3400) with a rig that features a tall fractional working sail plan with a self tacking jib for upwind work and an all lead bulb keel and lightweight, strong carbon fiber mast.
We’re also eagerly awaiting the new 26’ Tartan Fantail set to be unveiled this fall.
This Marc Lombard designed sail cruiser from Jeanneau is making its grand debut this autumn. She boasts many unique features and benefits for sailors. Following on from the success of the Sun Odyssey 409 and 439, the sail yacht is easy to handle and features a lifting keel option for easy movement in shallower waters and secluded bays as well as an optional self-tacking headsail. All lines lead back to the cockpit under the coach roof for a clean and uncluttered look that also makes moving about on deck safer and easier, and let’s not forget the fabulous interiors…
10. RS Venture Dinghy
We already featured RS Sailing’s new RS Venture sail dinghy in our New Designs section but we think it’s worth mentioning again. Although not quite as extravagant as some of the other yachts in the list, it’s the perfect family yacht for those looking for something more modest for weekend cruising, learning how to sail or for messing around on the water. It measures 16-feet tall and houses a family of six. It’s lightweight and easy to maneuver and the special retrofitted spinnaker kits enhance the whole sailing experience.
